About the Student Hostel
The Brighton Baptist Student Hostel is a ministry of the Brighton Baptist Church. The Hostel was established with funds provided by the Church, supplemented by interest-free loans or donations from the Church members and adherents. It commenced operations in February 1997.The mission of the Hostel is:
To provide good quality, accommodation and pastoral care for Victorian country, interstate and overseas students undertaking tertiary level studies in Melbourne, and to assist them to achieve their study goals and a measure of independent living.
Situated in a refurbished Victorian building on the Church property, the Hostel offers:
- Shared accommodation for up to 5 students in a safe and caring environment
- A management committee, appointed by the Church, to oversee the operation of the Hostel
- Fully furnished and equipped accommodation
Hostel Facilities Include:
- 4 student bedrooms, each with provision for connection to the internet
- Lounge, kitchen/dining room, 2 bathrooms and a laundry
- A Hostel telephone
The spacious lounge room is heated and furnished with a lounge suite, sofas and a colour television. The modern kitchen/dining room is equipped with a gas oven, dishwasher, microwave, refrigerator and space heater. The dining table seats 8 adults comfortably. The laundry contains a commercial size automatic washing machine and dryer.
Where is the Hostel Located?
The Hostel is centrally located in Brighton, one of the premier suburbs of Melbourne.It is situated on the corner of Bay Street, the main street of North Brighton which connects Port Phillip Bay with Nepean Highway.
This Location Offers:
- Easy access to train and bus lines
- Proximity to community facilities such as the library, post office, medical clinics, laundromats, supermarkets and health and fitness centres
- The delights of bayside living, with the Port Phillip Bay bicycle path, shops, cinemas and restaurants all within easy walking distance
How Does the Hostel Work?
The Hostel is run along the lines of a typical shared house, with responsibility for the quality of life resting on the co-operation of all the residents.Skills such as shopping, cooking, cleaning and the like will be shared on a rostered basis. Regular house meetings are held to maintain the smooth running of the Hostel.
Brighton Baptist Church provides a management committee to oversee the operation of the Hostel.
Residents are encouraged to treat the Hostel as their home. As with any other home to a large family, consideration for the rights of others is the touchstone. House Rules prohibit smoking and the consumption of alcohol or drugs of addiction. No pets are allowed.
Residents are required to sign an agreement which sets out their entitlement to shared accommodation, their rights and responsibilities.
How Much Does it Cost?
A low monthly fee, payable in advance, covers accommodation and utility charges such as gas, electricity and Hostel telephone rental. Private telephone line and internet charges apply.Residents are also expected to contribute to household running costs.
A bond equivalent to one month's accommodation fee is payable on acceptance of a place at the Hostel.
